The new Marriott Marquis Washington, DC, expected to open in May 2014 is expected to make quite an impact on Washington’s meetings and events scene.  With 1,175 rooms and more than 105,000 square feet of meeting space, it will be able to accommodate large meetings, without planners resorting to booking nearby space.

That 105,000 square feet of event space at the Marriott will include a 30,000 square-foot Marquis Ballroom (which can reportedly accommodate 3,000 attendees at once with 22′ ceilings and two junior ballrooms. It will also feature five food and beverage options for smaller meetings and networking, all located on the ground floor for easy access.

The hotel will also be the first to be physically connected by an underground  pedestrian concourse to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center—making both the Center and the city more attractive to large-scale conventions.

The Walter E. Washington Convention Center opened in 2003, and until now, no hotels have opened that connected directly to the facility or that could serve as a headquarters for a large group. In 2014, Washington will host several major events expected to attract thousands of visitors and yield millions in economic impact for D.C.
